Paulo Londra – Plan A (Official Video)
The letter A comes from the Greek letter alpha (Α α), which in turn comes from “alep” (), the first letter of the Phoenician alphabet. Alep could come from the pictogram of an ox’s head in the Proto-Sinaitic script. The Phoenicians, precisely, named this letter ‘Aleph’, which means “ox” in Phoenician, because of its resemblance to the head of a bull. The shape of this pictogram comes from the ancient Egyptian hieratic script, which represented the head of the god Apis (an ox with horns), and is shown in the figure.
The Etruscans brought the Greek alphabet to their civilization in the Italian peninsula and did not change this letter. Then the Romans adopted the Etruscan alphabet to write Latin, and the resulting letter was preserved in the Latin alphabet.
In the English language the letter ‘A’ is computed as the third most used letter, with a frequency of 8 % and in French it is in second place with a usage of 7.6 %. In German texts it has a frequency of 6.51 %, ranking sixth, and in Portuguese it is the third most used letter, with a relative frequency of 36.8 %.
If we give a 180 degree turn to the A and with a little imagination we add eyes and nose to the triangle below, we will get a bull with all its horns. And actually that is what it means, its origin is in the Proto-Sinaitic1 Aleph which means bull. The “A” or Aleph is Alpha in Greek.
It is interesting to note that the first alphabets were of protosinaitic1 Semitic origin (see: Semitic). A culture prior (proto) to the ancient Hebrews, Phoenicians2, etc. which had much contact with cultures such as the Greek and Egyptian, from which all our culture is born.
It is interesting to note that the original writing system, the sign alef did not represent the vowel A, but a consonant that sounds like a glottal stop. Even, the Hebrew alef (א) is considered a consonant. I have wondered, how is it possible that the Greek alpha (A) and the Hebrew alef (א) come from the same protosinaitic letter, but they are not similar at all. My friend Joaqu1n explained it to me this way:
